The Good Shift Business MOT

A clear picture of how your hospitality business is performing—and what to do next

When you’re busy running a hospitality business, it can be difficult to step back and see the whole operation clearly. The Good Shift Business MOT gives you a structured review of how your business is working, where it’s performing well and where there may be opportunities to improve.

I spend a full day on site observing your operation, speaking with you and your team, and reviewing the areas most relevant to your business. This can include kitchen and bar operations, cellar standards, team engagement, guest experience, atmosphere, systems, social media and business performance.

At the end of the day, you receive written findings and a prioritised action plan. The report gives you an overview of the recommended actions, helping you see what to focus on first. The fee also includes a follow-up to discuss the findings and answer your questions.

What problems can a Business MOT help address?

Operators are often so involved in the day-to-day running of their business that it’s hard to spot how separate issues connect. A menu, a staffing challenge, inconsistent service or unclear routines can each seem like an isolated problem, while the bigger picture is difficult to see.

The MOT gives you an experienced outside perspective across the operation. It can help bring attention to:

  • Areas where time, stock or sales may be getting lost

  • Inconsistent standards between shifts or teams

  • Friction in kitchen, bar or service operations

  • Gaps in communication, training or team engagement

  • Parts of the guest experience that may affect satisfaction and return visits

  • Systems or routines that could be clearer or more effective

  • Opportunities to make better use of your offer, marketing or available business information

What could you gain?

After the MOT, you’ll have a clearer view of what’s working well, what needs attention and which actions deserve priority. This can help you:

  • Make decisions with a more complete understanding of the business

  • Focus your time and investment on the most important improvements

  • Give your team clearer standards and expectations

  • Address operational issues before they become larger problems

  • Strengthen consistency for both your team and your guests

  • Identify opportunities to improve sales, control costs or make the operation run more smoothly

The review identifies opportunities and recommends actions; results depend on the decisions made and the work carried out afterwards.

What the MOT can cover

Every hospitality business is different, so the review is shaped around your operation and priorities. Depending on your business and the information available, it may include:

  • Kitchen workflow, food standards, menu performance and service

  • Bar operations, drinks offer, cellar standards and stock practices

  • Team engagement, roles, communication, training and induction

  • Guest experience, service standards, atmosphere and customer feedback

  • Day-to-day systems, procedures and management routines

  • Marketing and social media presence

  • Business performance information, including sales, costs and margins where relevant data is available

What you receive

  • A full day reviewing your business on site

  • Written findings delivered on the same day

  • A prioritised overview of recommended actions

  • A follow-up included in the fee to discuss the report

The action plan gives you clear direction on what to address and in what order. If you’d like support carrying out any of the recommended work, you can commission that separately through The Good Shift.

How it works

  1. We agree the focus. We discuss your business, your priorities and any information that will help make the review useful.

  2. I spend a full day on site. I observe the operation, review the agreed areas and speak with you and relevant members of the team.

  3. You receive your report that day. I bring the findings together into a written report and prioritised action overview.

  4. We follow up. We discuss the findings, answer questions and consider any further support you want to take forward.

Who it’s for
